Getting Started

  • Find a quiet place to sit comfortably upright—at the edge of your bed, on the floor, or in a chair
  • Close your eyes and tune into the breath or another point of focus to be fully present
  • Relax your body—loosen your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and soften your brows

Mindful Meditation to Help Release Attachment

Most emotions only last about 90 seconds, but we usually keep them going with our train of thought. When we get into an argument with a friend, we might feel anger in the moment. When we reflect back on it later that night, we may begin to ruminate on what was being said, why they had to bring up the past, how we responded, and what should have been done instead. This thought further snowballs and fuels our anger even further.

In this meditation, we’re going to experiment with experiencing emotions without getting caught up in the drama of the stories around them. And this is not the same as denying or repressing them, we’re just going to practice not chasing after them. Notice how it feels to release the energy of the emotion and let it pass.
