Hi Michelle. Unfortunately there is no free way to decrypt your files at the moment. Yo I don’t have any backup you can work from to get some files back?

We always suggest to make a backup of your encrypted drive in case a decrypter will become available.

I got hit with Spora, also through a fake Chrome extension (I’m embarrassed I got caught). My Word & Excel files were encrypted, but not my pdf’s. I paid the ransom, and got a decryption key, which worked on my Excel files but not all my Word files. Most of my files were backed up – I’m glad it didn’t hit my external hard drives, but that may have been just luck. I now keep them disconnected unless I’m actually backing something up or retrieving something.

Hi K. The worst thing that can happen is that you pay and you will not be able to decrypt your files. There are no guarantees that the crooks will actually provide you with a functioning decrypter.

Regarding your question if the malware is fully removed: while there are no guarantees (unless you backup, then wipe the system and install from scratch), a well functioning malware solution (such as ours :), plus a look at the logs should give you confidence that the malware is removed. As a result, I think I may have minimized the damage, but every single PDF file on my laptop is now encrypted. I’ve run several diagnostics, tried System Restore, and attempted to locate shadow files, to no avail (this is suddenly when the price of a Mac seems attractive). I am ready to pay the ransom, but don’t want to get caught in a spiral. I’m pretty sure the malware is removed from my machine … how do I know for sure? What’s the worst thing that happens if I pay the ransom?
