I fully agree that the information in “PIN number” is redundant. Though it can be considered common sense for better understanding I’d say. Even Wikipedia refers to it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_identification_number

Every day I hear or read PIN NUMBER, or ATM MACHINE.

PIN is a Personal Identification Number, not PIN Number Number, and ATM is an Automatic Teller Machine, not an Automatic Teller Machine Machine.
